Hayling Billy Heritage

This wonderful short film by Mike Beel records a Hayling Billy Heritage Event organised on behalf of the "Friends of Chichester Harbour".

It shows the meeting at the Station Theatre and has great views of the theatre and also the billy trail. It also includes (at 3 minutes in) an epic 6 minute film showing a steam train journey from Havant to Hayling around 1963, shortly before the line was closed.

Hayling Billy Railway Films / Videos

The Hayling Billy Railway ran from Havant, over the bridge at Langstone and ending at the South Hayling Station. It opened in 1867 and ran until 1963 when the line was closed.. Subsequently the rails and stations were dismantled leaving only the South Hayling Goods shed. The line was nick named after the small "Puffing Billy" locomotives (Officially LB&SCR A1 class) used on the line. These steam locomotives were used because the timber bridge at langstone did not have the load bearing capacity to support larger locomotives.

The following youtube videos show the train journey from Havant to Hayling and back again along the Hayling Billy Railway. People with sharp eyes may occasionally glimpse the large goods shed at Hayling Station which is now the Station Theatre.

Unfortunately there's been some copying between the various youtube videos so there is some repetition of the same shots in many of the videos. However, there's normally something new in each one.

Apologies if some of the videos above are no longer available. Many youtube videos are removed/moved without notice.
