Hayling Island Amateur Dramatic Society presents

People

7:30pm, £14
(No performances Sunday to Wednesday)

A comedy by Alan Bennett.

Directed by David Ellis.

This amateur production of “People” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. www.concordtheatricals.co.uk

People spoil things; there are so many of them and the last thing one wants is them traipsing through one's house. But with the park a jungle and a bath on the billiard table, what is one to do? Dorothy wonders if an attic sale could be a solution.

After centuries a traditional family estate lies in a state of disrepair; desperately requiring financing to keep the once grand residence restored and maintained. Lady Dorothy, our world-weary, beleaguered central character, would rather sell off the contents of the house or even allow explicit films to shoot at the residence in order to save the property from the grips of the National Trust. However her rather more proper sister wholeheartedly disagrees. This central conflict enables Bennett to examine the philosophical and ethical dilemmas of restoration, in an age of rampant public consumption, with hilarious and touching results.

Abigails Party

7:30pm (2:30pm Sat Mat),
£16 (£15 Under 16/over 65)

Small talk and schadenfreude

British suburbanites Laurence and Beverly are entertaining their new neighbours, Angela and Tony as well as Susan, whose teenage daughter, Abigail is having a party to which Susan has been dis-invited.

Over drinks and snacks, cliches and fatuous small talk abound. The tension escalates as the marital strain between Beverly and Laurence surfaces. Susan's anxiety over Abigail's party accelerates as rock music and God-knows-what permeate the room.

As Beverly and Angela offer some supremely tactless remarks, reality breaks through the smugness as sudden drama hits.

Abigail's Party was originally evolved from scratch entirely by rehearsal through improvisation and was memorably recorded for BBC television in 1977 starring Alison Steadman.

Hayling Island Newsreel 1977-80

2:30pm and 7:30pm £5

Unique film footage of events on Hayling as recorded by the Hayling Islander

Due to popular demand, and extra evening showing has been added.

NOT SEEN SINCE 1980!

Four newsreels – totalling 100 minutes – take you back to Island events from the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations of 1977 to the summer carnival of 1980, via the heavy snow and floods of 1979, the departure of the Hayling Billy steam train . . . and nudists on Hayling beach.

The newsreels were shot by Robert Godfrey on 16mm cine film and shown at the time to local groups and organisations, but not seen since.

“This incredible footage shows Hayling as I remember it from my childhood. It’s great to see such community spirit captured in all the events – with so many recognisable faces.”
WAYNE MOODY, of the popular Facebook page Hayling Island Then and Now

Ever After

Thursday, Friday Evenings at 7:30pm,
Saturday and Sunday Matinees at 2:30pm,
£14 adults / £10 kids (Early Bird: £12 Adults, £8 Kids)

A musical(ish) comedy written and directed by James Wood and Chloe Hearne.

Just how wrong can a bedtime story go?

When a parent with zero imagination attempts family storytelling, nonsense and chaos are the order of the day.

Neighbours become unwilling royalty, teachers turn into billy goats, and the postman makes a surprisingly good Big Bad Wolf – while three very opinionated children add their own special brand of mayhem.

Fun, music and chaos for all the family.
